What's New in Belize
Letter From Belize
Excerpts from an email from David Gegg Managing Director to Jennifer Rakowski
Sales Manager Way To Go Tours
Dear Jennifer,
I read with interest your comments and of course the article on EcoTourism in Belize.
The Association of Private Protected Areas, whose vision is “to conserve Belize’s natural resources, wildlife, landscapes, and seascapes for the benefit, use and enjoyment of future generations through private conservation initiatives” states that almost 42% of Belizean land area is made up of national parks and other forms of protected areas. Over the years large sums have been spent in tour guide training that includes an appreciation for nature and its importance to our future. All guides today must be licensed by the Tourism Board if they are to conduct tours.
The Rio On Pools in the Mountain Pine Ridge area are a beautiful site. I remember visiting the Rio On Pools after a rainfall and the pools would appear dirty due to the sediment washing into them. However, they are still an amazing site to see whether it has rained or not.
The Operators and Hoteliers in Belize are extremely conscious of our environment and play our part in protecting it. Within a couple of weeks you will be able to go to a new website http://www.GRACEBELIZE.org for additional information on Belize. This new site also reflects an initiative which has been undertaken in the hopes of placing some 27,000 acres of land under protected status. The area is extremely rich in Biodiversity and Wildlife, is very scenic and is only 21 miles from Belize City. At present we employ about 15 individuals from the local community, have paid for their training as tour guides, and today they work in Eco-Tourism instead of hunting for local game for a living. Another of our initiatives is planting 5000 mahogany trees every year and you can now attend a carbon neutral tour in which participants actually plant a tree themselves. We are a process of establishing a status of “Carbon Neutral Tour Operations”. This accreditation is granted by The World Land Trust in London and is an honor to have.
There are many other examples where the Private Sector has supported and sponsored similar initiatives and our Government has always been very supportive of conservation agendas.
Best regards,
David Gegg

Belize Zoo & Belize City
This half-day get away is a great overview of Belize! Depart Belize City for the Belize Zoo, a wonderful wildlife habitat, created as a sanctuary for the country’s indigenous species. The Belize Zoo was first created for animals which were injured or donated to the facility and could not be returned to the wild. This is home for an impressive array of Large Cats, Primates, Reptiles and Birds, which gives you an opportunity to view Belize’s prolific wildlife in one location. Then it’s on to see the “city sights”. Belize City today remains the commercial capital of the country and is home to about 75,000 people. The Colonial Governor’s Mansion, Redbrick St. John’s Cathedral and the Supreme Court buildings, flanked by cannons used in the “Battle of St. George’s Caye” in 1798, are only a few of the sites left over from our Colonial past. Note the Colonial wooden architecture that is evident throughout many of the city’s buildings. Your guide will provide an interesting reflection of the city’s history.
